Chico’s FAS Inc., is a Florida women’s clothing chain. It has been sued in San Francisco for allegedly requiring store employees to spend their own money buying the brands they sell to satisfy dress codes requirements at work.

The lawsuit filed Monday in San Francisco Superior Court claims that Chico’s illegally required employees at 51 California stores “to purchase Chico’s apparel and accessories as a condition of employment.”

Similar lawsuits recently have gone after San Francisco’s Gap Inc., Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. of New York, and Abercrombie & Fitch, which is based in Ohio. All three retailers have said their dress-code policies are legal.

Daniel Feder, brought the lawsuit in San Francisco. The lawsuit seeks class-action status and unspecified damages in the Chico’s lawsuit. Feder is also representing plaintiffs in the retail-uniform lawsuits against Gap and Polo.
